"A thriving and important part of the school, the 540 individual performing arts lessons a week attest to this." The Good Schools Guide 2011

Extra Curricular Activities

In our school aims we describe how we want to develop in every pupil the skills, aptitudes and abilities required to become emotionally resilient and autonomous learners. We want to encourage in every child a sense of commitment, to value high achievement, to be prepared to adapt and to innovate.

Our extra-curricular activity programme plays an important part enabling us to work towards these aims. It does so by extending the curriculum beyond that which is taught in timetabled sessions. These extra activities offer pupils opportunities:

  • For learning the value of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition diversity, and a sense of culture and community
  • To apply academic skills in a real-world context and are thus considered part of a balanced education.
  • To make choices in terms of what they want to do, or not as the case may be, which in itself can be educational.

Further information on extra curricular activities can be obtained by downloading the pdf document or emailing extra-curricular@amesburyschool.co.uk

Dance

Pupils are taught Ballet, ISTD Modern and Funky Modern dance by the Showshack Theatre School which is managed and owned by Pauline Thomson.  Pupils can choose from the following options:

  • Ballet (Reception - Year 4) The Royal Academy of Dance covers three areas of dance: ballet technique, natural movement and character dance. These lessons aim to improve posture and increase confidence. All ballet lessons take place on Fridays.
  • ISTD Modern Dance (Nursery - Year 3) Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Classes include improvisation, co-ordination, flexibility, rhythm and technique. They follow the ISTD syllabus.
  • Funky Modern Dance (Years 4 - 8) Fun, funky, street-style Jazz classes which are particularly good for fitness levels, flexibility and co-ordination. All Funky Modern lessons take place on Wednesdays.

Drama Club

Drama provides a particularly valuable means of increasing self-confidence and social awareness.  Pupils are involved physically as well as emotionally and intellectually: the pupils learn through doing.  Drama is, moreover, a co-operative process through which students develop their ability to share and communicate.  The purpose of the Drama Club is to enhance social skills, turn taking, imagination, freedom of expression, acting skills and voice projection. This club is available for Pupils in Years 1 and 2 only.

Speech and Drama
Mrs A Phillips, A.T.C.L. (Dist)

Speech and Drama lessons help students articulate their thoughts clearly, and encourage confidence in speaking in public, to name but two of the many benefits of these lessons.  The classes are designed to develop communication skills, build confidence and encourage imaginative performances.  Pupils are introduced to literature and drama through poetry and prose speaking as well as solo and group acting.

Video Technology

In V:Tech sessions children learn about the industry workflow of scripting, preproduction, production, postproduction and distribution in the most effective way by creating their own piece of film within this framework.  The children will be guided through the processes of scripting, planning, directing and shooting their footage on broadcast resolution DV cameras, before starting postproduction in Final Cut Express.  Final Cut Express is the student edition of Apple's revolutionary Final Cut Pro, the film industry's standard for digital editing.  It delivers professional quality results without too much of the complexity of its bigger brother.

Music Technology

M:Tech classes offer children a unique opportunity to enhance creative thought and individual expression by enabling them to create exciting music immediately.  Music technology makes it possible to compose in a way previously unimaginable through the use of computers, mixers, microphones and sampled instruments (from piano to didgeridoo and everything in between).  M:Tech is a wonderful addition to traditional music and allows children of every age and capability to explore their potential.  M:Tech provides music technology activity courses at school.  By teaching children to get to grips with recording software and techniques they are able to develop compositional skills to create their own songs.
