Amesbury Mosaic

WHITE TIGERS, BLUE DOLPHINS, WILD DOGS AND RARE SEAHORSES AT AMESBURY SCHOOL

Children from Amesbury Preparatory School unveiled a stunning abstract mosaic of tigers, jellyfish, wild dogs, squirrels and elephants last week which will be a daily reminder to children of their commitment to work towards a more sustainable future. Every child between the ages of 7 to 13 contributed to the mosaic, having worked with the well-known contemporary artist Ros Burgin. The child’s eye view has been installed immediately outside of the Performing Arts Centre. Tom Briers, aged 8, chose a checkerspot butterfly ‘because there might not be any more of them in a few years’, Hamish Urquhart, aged 9, chose a Blue Dolphin because ‘I swam with some dolphins in Portugal and it was the best thing that has ever happened to me, they are so intelligent and kind, it would be terrible if they became extinct’, whilst Lauren Thomas’s choice was a White Tiger because it is now very close to extinction and yet ‘it is one of the most beautiful creatures on earth’.

Invited guests including the Mayor of Haslemere, Mrs Melanie Odell, and the Mayor of Godalming were able to enjoy a presentation explaining the process that the children had been a part of leading up to completion.  Headmaster Nigel Taylor said ‘a couple of years ago we decided that we would like to have high quality art work on the estate and this is the latest piece. The school is involved in the eco-schools award and this enabled us to link the award with our Visual Arts department.’

Amesbury is a co-educational day school for pupils between the ages of 2-13+ in Haslemere/Hindhead.
