Year 2's Field Trip to Gilbert White Rural Studies Centre

Our Year 2 visit to Selborne on Monday,10th May was a day of perfect childhood memories. We arrived at the Gilbert White Field Studies Centre in the morning and having met our host, Miriam, we prepared for our field study.

The sun shone as we made our way into the meadow where we measured wind direction and speed, air and soil temperatures, humidity and light level.

Gilbert White enjoyed walking so he and his brother cut out a zig zag path in the hillside overlooking Selborne. This area is now owned and protected by the National Trust.  Everyone appreciated the wonderful views at the top and we took a little time to draw our observations. It was such a clear day we could see for a distance of about 25 miles.

After lunch we went through Selborne village, behind the church and down to the stream. Here we planned a fair test to measure the time it took for plastic ducks to go downstream. The atmosphere was reminiscent of the Grand National!

On the way back we popped into the church where there are two marvellous stained glass windows. The older one depicts all the birds that Gilbert White mentions in his books and the modern one showing local animals and leaves.

We could have stayed for hours and both children and adults agreed that it would be the perfect place to go for a summer holiday treat!
