Year 4 Trip to the Science Museum

The day was certainly action-packed with Barbie exploding out of a cannon, observing a Science Show involving explosions detailing the theory behind the Fire Triangle, seeing 3D caterpillars, stick insects and butterflies in an IMAX Theatre the size of four double-decker buses, launching bottle rockets, building electrical circuits, racing small yachts, observing water pressure, building bridges, levitating magnets, echoing sound tunnels and learning about the problems facing us due to using too many fossil fuels.

The new and improved Launch Pad on the third floor of the Museum proved to be a hit with the children.  Lauren and Imogen were building large towers out of foam blocks in order to test the theory of gravity.  Antonia, Flora and Isabel were observing the heat generated from their bodies on an infra-red camera.  Brandon had his image projected onto a screen using a rudimentary pin-hole camera.

The children had to co-operate as part of a team to keep the production of rice going on the conveyor belt by operating the levers and pulleys manually.

Mr Lawrence touched a large magnetic pole with his bare hands and was zapped by an electrical impulse!  I told him the sign said 'Do not touch this display!' His hair showed no sign of trauma. The children were fascinated with the static electricity generated by touching this pole.

These were just a few of the activities the children were involved in during our annual trip to the Science Museum in London.  Of course the Science Museum Shop was another priority and the children returned home with an impressive array of magnets, fibre optic pens, fans and various weird and wonderful gadgets to impress the family.
