Year 4 visit 1940s

To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Normandy landings and to celebrate the school’s close connection with Bernard Montgomery who lead the ground forces in Operation Overlord, Year 4 pupils visited Portsmouth recently. They took part in a ‘Home Front’ workshop where they looked at items from the 1940s and decided what they would have been used for and then acted out a simulated air raid attack which involved a team of fire-watchers, fire officers who used a stirrup pump to extinguish the flames, nurses and medics who attended to the wounded and members of the public who rushed to the air-raid shelter. In the D-Day Museum, pupils were divided in groups of three with a particular theme (eg children & home, clothes and uniforms) which they had to research, recording their information which included sound, photographs and text, using the latest technology in the form of OOKL phones. They are now able to access this information and edit it. The pupils (and staff) dressed up in 1940s costumes and a fantastic day was enjoyed by all. The photos show children by ‘Monty’s’ summerhouse where he sat prior to June 6th 1944 and children involved in the workshops.
