Year 8's Production of The Crucible

The Crucible (meaning ‘a vessel for melting and purification’) tells the story of the persecution of ‘witches’ or devil worshippers, in 1692 within the strict Puritan Colony established in Salem, Massachusetts, USA.

Though the story itself is based on fact, Arthur Miller represents there the outrageous ‘witch hunt’ which took place in 50s America for likely communists leading to widespread betrayal, accusations and trials.

This is not a religious play but a political play.  It is about power and control by the state set against individual courage, loyalty and love with the voice of justice and reason trying to be heard in between.  These themes make The Crucible as relevant today as when it was first performed in 1953 and it has guaranteed our Year 8 leavers a profoundly thought provoking and memorable final production at Amesbury.
