Sport: Overview
Does sport play an important role at Amesbury?
It does. It has a unifying influence throughout the school and by 'taking part' children learn something about themselves, make friends, and with luck find a sport they'll want to play for life.
Does everyone play sport or just an elite few?
Amesbury's sporting reputation is largely due to the emphasis we place on developing 'a culture of interest and inclusiveness' in sport. For example look at the photograph of the boys playing tennis at morning break. It was natural for all of them, irrespective of their ability to dash from lessons to a tennis court and 'play' tennis.
Four full time Physical Education teachers ensure that every child receives expert tuition.
Over the last five years Amesburians have achieved county and national honors in netball, hockey rugby and tennis.
Does the school offer scholarships for sport?
Yes. However in order to win an award a boy or girl must be 'head and shoulders above other very talented pupils within their year group'. There are normally only 3-4 sports scholars at Amesbury throughout the entire school at the same time. However in the last five years our sports scholars have won sporting scholarships to senior schools well known for their sporting prowess such as Cranleigh, Millfield, Rugby School & Wellington College.
