The Eco Schools Award

'We looked them up in a book and discovered they were goldfinches – they’ve been coming back regularly since then!’

There are many pupils who have been fascinated by all the different species of birds visiting the new school bird feeder. It was erected to enhance the biodiversity of our school grounds as part of the Eco-Amesbury programme. The Eco-Amesbury programme was started in the Trinity Term 2008 to work towards the government’s target for sustainable schools. It follows the international Eco-schools award scheme which guides schools on their sustainable journey and provides a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

So far the children have been involved with measuring the school’s energy use, surveying traffic, monitoring wildlife, producing posters and corresponding with schoolchildren in India to improve their understanding of other cultures.

‘It’s interesting talking to people from India because they see things differently. Their favourite game is cricket whereas ours is football.’

The children have also been involved in producing a magnificent mosaic which has been installed in the school grounds to serve as a permanent symbol of the school’s commitment to more sustainable living.

The next big project is a school garden so that the children can grow their own vegetables!
