Visual Arts

The Mosaic pictured above is one of a number of pieces of art set in the school grounds that the boys and girls have made.

Look carefully as the mosaic changes and see if you can find the small image of a 'lollipop tree'.

What was the thinking that went into its creation?

Phoebe and Lucy wanted to produce a mosaic of an iconic tree of the tropical rainforests 'the lungs of the earth.'

To find out which tree is iconic of the rainforests they contacted The Ecologist magazine, Kew gardens and The Eden Project, but were thwarted.

Rainforests are too diverse and complex to have a single tree which is iconic.

And so they settled on a British oak tree, in winter, with long leafless branches, in a representational style.

But really they were looking for something more universal than a British oak.

And eventually they found inspiration in the childlike qualities and universality of the lollipop tree.

Deep and heavy stuff, but perhaps it will make you curious to discover more about the mosaic if you visit us.

Why, for example, did Tom choose a particular butterfly, and what was his journey?

What is the story behind the seahorse?

For Phoebe, Lucy and Tom being genuinely creative was just a normal part of a normal school day at Amesbury.
