Jon Whybrow - Interim Head of Amesbury from September 2020

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jon Whybrow to the post of Interim Head. Jon will join the school in September and his appointment is for the 2020/21 academic year. For this period, he will lead the Amesbury Community and work with the School’s Governing Board to select a full-time Head whose appointment will commence in September 2021.

Jon Whybrow has a long and distinguished career in the independent Preparatory School sector. Qualifying as a teacher from Exeter University and following a short-service commission in the Royal Marines, Jon commenced his career at Latymer Upper School, where he taught both Geography and PE. On leaving Latymer, he held teaching posts at Edgeborough School in Farnham, Emanuel School in London and Devonshire House in London, of which he was appointed Deputy Head.

Jon’s first Headship was of the Junior School at City of London Freemen’s School in Ashtead, a position he held for eight years before moving as Head to Beachborough School in Northamptonshire in 2005. During his eight years at Beachborough, Jon grew pupil numbers from 220 to 320 and led an academic team of 60.

In 2013 Jon was appointed Head of Cheltenham College, Preparatory School, a 400 strong coeducational day and boarding school for children aged 2.5-13 and with close links to Cheltenham College. He retired from Cheltenham in 2018.

Jon brings his considerable breadth of experience of both teaching and Prep School management to Amesbury, and is excited to lead the school’s 70-strong team Common Room.

Tarquin Henderson, Amesbury Chair of Governors said, “We are delighted to welcome Jon to Amesbury. He has ‘Prep School’ written through him like a stick of rock and I am sure his energetic, personable character will be welcomed by children, staff and parents alike. He has a proven track record as a strong and decisive leader throughout his career, always leaving schools in a better place than when he arrived.

“All schools will be working hard to consider how best to support their children and staff as the country emerges from the Coronavirus pandemic. Amesbury is no exception and we are very fortunate to have Jon with us at this critical time.

“I would like to thank our current Headmistress, Sheina Wright for the significant and very positive contribution which she has made to our school since 2018. In particular, her leadership over recent weeks and months as we prepared for and delivered an outstanding remote learning curriculum was exceptional, as has been her leadership of the Common Room in the preparation for the school’s phased return after Half Term. I wish her every success in the future.”

Commenting on his appointment, Jon Whybrow said, “I have known Amesbury since the 1980s and I have great affection for its unique ethos and culture. The community has always exuded energy, drive and togetherness and these are the qualities which will help us to work through these challenging times. And remember, from challenge comes not only difficulty, but also exciting opportunities. I can’t wait to start!”
