Jon Whybrow has been confirmed as Amesbury’s full-time Head following a comprehensive recruitment process held over the last four months by the school’s Board of Governors. Jon has been in post since September on an interim basis and in that time has made a universally positive impact on the school’s children, staff and parents. He takes up the permanent role at Amesbury following an impressive career leading Prep and Junior schools over the last 20 years.
Tarquin Henderson, Chair of Governors, stated, “The opportunity to lead Amesbury attracted an exceptionally strong field, and we were fortunate to meet many very able and experienced Heads and senior leaders. However, from an initial field of over 40, one candidate stood out and I am therefore delighted that Jon has been appointed.”
Jon Whybrow’s track record is extremely impressive. He had most recently been Head of Cheltenham Prep for five years and prior to that, led Beachborough Prep School in Buckinghamshire for eight years. His earlier experience included eight years as Head of the City of London’s Freemen’s Junior School, Deputy Head of Devonshire House and Head of Year 8 at Emanuel School. He started his career as a teacher at Edgeborough School in Farnham, where he had more recently returned as a governor, before taking the Interim Head role at Amesbury in the summer.
His experience and knowledge of Amesbury’s market is matched by a strong desire to lead Amesbury into the next phase of its growth. He is both energetic and progressive, but with the experience to ensure that the school will remain true to its core principles. At his heart is a desire to do the very best for children, to build a school environment that can offer every child the greatest opportunity to grow and prosper so that they might become the best version of themselves, and to prepare them for their next school and the world outside. He is a passionate educationalist who will always put the best interests of children first.
Commenting on his appointment, Jon Whybrow stated, “From the very beginning of my time at Amesbury I have felt that I can make a strong contribution to an already thriving school. The innate goodness which underpins the behaviour of the whole Amesbury community tells me that I am working with children, parents, staff and governors who genuinely care. It is with a sense of heightened anticipation that I take over the reins at this great school and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that the future will bring”.
Tarquin Henderson concluded, “I am delighted that Jon will continue to build upon the enormously positive impact which he has made since he arrived at the end of the Trinity Term. I very much look forward to working with him to ensure Amesbury retains its unique character and reinforces and strengthens its position as one of the very best independent co-educational prep schools in its market, a school with a reputation for excellence and with access to the very best senior schools in this area and beyond.”
